State Swimming Results
The Fenwick swim teamcapped off its history making season in impressive fashion by placing 12th at the IHSA State Meet on Saturday in Winnetka. Fenwick tallied 49.5 points, while Rosary won the state title with 154 points.
As for the Friars, they easily met head coach Renee Miller’s goals of several top 12 finishes in individual and relay events. In fact, their 12th-place state finish is the best in school history.
“I think the girls had a great meet [state finals],” Miller said. “They definitely stepped up and really surpassed any of our expectations. We really only had a few swimmers, including our diver [Mary Kate Campbell] back with experience at state this year, so this was truly an unbelievable accomplishment.”
Stephanie Ovalle finished 10th in the state in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.74 seconds. Fellow sophomore Casey Dollard also garnered a pair of 10th-place marks in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.70) and 100-yard backstroke (:58.49). In the 100-yard backstroke, Kelly Ryan timed in three spots ahead of Dollard at 58.18 seconds.
Coming off a great effort at the Fenwick sectional, senior team captain Krystle Kutak finished ninth at state in the 100-yard butterfly (:57.80).
In the diving competition, Mary Kate Campbell earned the highest individual honor for Fenwick by taking third with a score of 378.85.
The Friars’ relay teams also earned several tremendous times. Fenwick pulled off a hat trick of 10th-place showings in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, Maryclare Finn, Mariclaire Bresnahan, Dollard and Kutak teamed up to post a time of 1:50.73.
In the 200-freestyle relay, Morgan Bonk, Bresnahan, Ryan and Ovalle scored a 1:38.66. In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Friars’ Ovalle, Dollard, Ryan and Bonk produced a time of 3:35.35.
