It figures to be a two-team race in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference this year between Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central. LT’s head boys swimming coach Scott Walker likes his team’s chances with a large portion of swimmers returning from last year’s co-WSC championship squad. One of those returnees is senior Ross Ford, and Walker couldn’t be happier.
“[Ford] is on a mission this year,” said Walker. “He is looking to do anything possible to be a state champion.”
Ford, who finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly last year, is set to swim his fourth year on varsity this winter. His experience and work ethic are a big reason why Walker considers him the leader of the team.
Ford’s leadership will be put to the test early, as LT opens its season at the Stevenson Invitational. The Lions will be among 16 teams in the prestigious tournament that includes Fenwick, St. Charles North, Libertyville, and Stevenson among others.
“[The Stevenson Invitational] is a very good tournament and it is at the beginning of our season. We’re very excited to see how we match up against these other schools,” said Walker.
The Lions should be well-prepared for such an early season challenge. Walker said his swimmers had been working hard on their own during the off-season.
“There is a lot of excitement and enthusiasm,” said Walker of the atmosphere during recent practices. “I think they are very mission-oriented.”
Lyons returns its entire 400-yard freestyle relay squad from last year. The group placed ninth at the state finals. Ford, Pat Donovan, and Peter Bruton highlight the strong relay team.
Walker said his team has set a few challenging goals this season, including winning the WSC again.
“We also want to get all three of our relays to swim at the state meet,” said Walker. “We’re also looking to get some more individuals to swim in the finals.”
The Lions leap into the pool and the season at Glenbrook North on Friday (5 p.m.)
