A dog that had been ordered euthanized by Riverside’s police chief last month has won a reprieve and will live out its life in Door County, Wisconsin.
On Oct. 24, Police Chief Eugene Karczewski ordered a white German shepherd owned by Craig and Claudia Chapulis to be destroyed after it got loose from its home in the 300 block of Shenstone Road and charged a couple and their dog. No one was hurt in the September incident, but it followed on the heels of three other attacks from 2003-06.
After the 2006 attack, in which the German shepherd injured another dog in the backyard of a Shenstone Road home, Karczewski ruled that the dog, named Shilo, was vicious. According to the village vicious dog law, Karczewski had no option but to order Shilo destroyed after it got loose in September 2007.
Shilo was to have been destroyed Nov. 1, but was not after the Chapulises were able to negotiate a settlement with the village that would allow the dog to live.
On Nov. 19, village trustees voted unanimously to accept the settlement, which states that Shilo will be turned over to the White Paws German Shepherd Rescue in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The settlement also states that White Paws, which seeks people to adopt dogs they’ve rescued, must maintain ownership of the Shilo until her death and not put her up for adoption.
