Fenwick      65
St. Laurence 40
John Comfort sparked the Fenwick boys basketball team in the second quarter of Friday night’s Chicago Catholic League North match-up against St. Laurence and led the No. 20-ranked Friars to their seventh straight victory.
After Fenwick had gotten off to a sluggish start, falling behind by as much as 16-8, Comfort scored eight points in the stanza and the team forced 10 turnovers en route to a 65-40 walloping of its fifth consecutive CCL opponent. The Friars (13-5, 5-0), who now sit atop the North Division, have yet to lose in 2008.
Comfort led all scorers with 19 points. The Princeton-bound senior swished two 3-pointers to start the third quarter that eventually led to a 23-point Fenwick lead.
Fenwick’s defense was also a highpoint in the game. The Friars outscored the Vikings 23-7 in the third quarter.
Things didn’t start off so well for Fenwick. The Friars missed five of their first six shots, but reserve players Reid Rooney and Matt Condron hit the boards. Both finished with seven rebounds apiece for the night.
“We were stuck in the mud awhile and we needed someone to give us a lift,” said Fenwick head coach John Quinn. “Rooney and Condron did the muscle work for us.”
Four different Fenwick players hit 3-pointers in the third quarter, four of which came from Comfort. Both Derek Tartt and Vince Humphrey finished the night with eight points apiece for the Friars, who are in first place in the North Division with St. Ignatius a game behind.
Cameras will be rolling for tonight’s match-up against CL North foe Loyola Academy (15-7, 3-2) at Fenwick (7:30 p.m.). Comcast is televising the game for its Game of the Week special. The Friars travel into Chicago Friday for a game against Gordon Tech (7:30 p.m.). They return home Saturday to host Holy Trinity at the field house at 7:30 p.m.
