While the New York Giants proved they can win the “big game” in Super Bowl XLII, the Riverside Brookfield boys basketball team has been doing it on a weekly basis.

The Bulldogs earned arguably their biggest victory of the year, a 64-55 win over Ridgewood on Friday, setting up assuredly their “next” biggest game of the season this weekend against Fenton.

RB and Fenton, who split their first two meetings, currently share top honors in the Metro Suburban Conference with the winning team on Friday securing the inside track to the conference crown.

“If we win [against Fenton], we will clinch at least a share of the conference title,” said RB coach Tom McCloskey. “We also will have beaten both Fenton and Ridgewood two out of three games.”

At Ridgewood, the Bulldogs (14-7, 5-2) showed what champions are made of during the final three minutes of regulation. Trailing the Rebels 54-52, RB went on a decisive 11-1 spurt thanks to key points from Dan Oswald, Billy Vandemerkt and Shane Kilcoyne. Oswald ignited the run with a clutch 3-pointer that lifted RB to a 55-54 lead, which they never relinquished the rest of the way.

“It was a huge game for us,” McCloskey said. “All in all, I think it was one of our best games of the season. We executed well, we played excellent defense and we really competed out there. It was a great high school basketball atmosphere.”

Despite playing on a recently injured ankle, Chris Parrish managed 15 points against the Rebels. Sean McGonagill (12 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds), Oswald (10 points, 6 rebounds) and Kilcoyne (12 points, 8 rebounds) played key roles as well for the Bulldogs.

“It was a big win and we were able to pull it out in the closing minutes,” Parrish said. “I think our defense really stepped it up. Now, we have Fenton this week and it’s basically a do-or-die situation for us.”

Adding more momentum heading into the showdown against the Bison, RB captured its fifth win in a row with a 77-57 win over Deerfield on Saturday.

Parrish led the host Bulldogs with 21 points and seven rebounds, while McGonagill chipped in 12 points and seven assists. Anthony Kilcoyne (9 rebounds), Oswald (8 points) and Vandemerkt (7 assists) also contributed to a balanced RB attack which produced 27 field goals off 20 assists.
