William J. Cooney, 70, Attorney
Longtime Riverside resident William J. Cooney, 70, died Feb. 6, 2008 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital.
Born on June 3, 1937, Mr. Cooney was active in many aspects of Riverside life during his 42 years as a resident. At the time of his death, Mr. Cooney was a member of the Riverside Plan Commission. He previously served on the board of the Riverside Public Library and was past president of the St. Mary School board. He was also an active member of Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, which provides free legal services for Chicago’s poor.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Cooney was an attorney for 38 years at the Chicago law firm of McBride, Baker & Coles.
He is survived by his wife, Julie Cooney (nee Heron); his children, William (Kimberly) Cooney, David (Peg) Cooney, Kate (Kevin) Maloney and Elizabeth Cooney; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 11 at St. Mary Church in Riverside. Interment was private.

LeRoy E. Krueger, 87, Accountant
Brookfield resident LeRoy E. Krueger, 87, died Feb. 3, 2008 at Hinsdale Hospital.
Born in Chicago on April 20, 1920 to William and Caroline (nee Dahlmann) Krueger, he served in the U.S Army during World War II. He worked as an accountant for National Van Lines prior to his retirement.
Mr. Krueger was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gladys M. Krueger (nee Petersen). He is survived by his sons, Lawrence E. (Theresa) Krueger of Downers Grove and Glenn (Christine) Krueger and his grandchildren, Matthew Krueger, Daniel Krueger, Emily Krueger and David Krueger.
A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Benjamin Ball, was held Feb. 6 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brookfield, followed by interment at Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park.

Laura J. Nielsen, 56, Battled cancer
Laura J. Nielsen, 57, died Jan. 26, 2008 at her sister’s Brookfield home after a long battle with cancer.
Born on Jan. 2, 1952 in Hinsdale, she is survived by her children, Dawn Nielsen and Misty Nielsen; her companion, Glen Martinek; her grandchildren, Adam Nielsen and Kaylee Nielsen; her sister, Donna J. Bly; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy R. Nielsen Sr. and Evelyn J. Nielsen-Smith (nee Bocinsky); her brother, Roy R. Nielsen Jr.; and her sister, Lynda J. Nielsen.
Services were private.

Memorial gathering for Anthony Azzarello
Family and friends of Anthony Azzarello Jr., who died Oct. 13, 2007 at the age of 87, will be gathering on Saturday, Feb. 16 beginning at 2 p.m. at Hitzeman Funeral Home, 9445 31st St. in Brookfield, to share remembrances of the retired Brookfield police captain and longtime Brookfield resident. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m.
