Francis P. Donlan M.D., 91, Surgeon

Francis P. Donlan M.D., 91, died March 15, 2008 at his home in Riverside, where he and his family lived for over half a century.

Mr. Donlan was a surgeon at St. Anthony Hospital in Chicago and Oak Park Hospital. A U.S. Army veteran during World War II, he received his medical degree at Loyola University in Chicago just prior to being drafted.

After the war, he was a resident at Hines VA Hospital and later was on staff at St. Anthony Hospital, where he was president of the medical staff for a time. He later joined the medical staff at Oak Park Hospital, retiring at the age of 65.

He is survived by his wife, Emilia Donlan; his children, Stephen (Mary) Donlan, Maryann (Thomas) Anglim, Dorothy (William) Kysiak; his grandchildren, Stephen Donlan, Timothy Donlan, Guerin Anglim, Kara Anglim and Kaitlin Kysiak; his sister, Ruth (the late Charles) Carroll; many nieces and nephews; and his special caregivers, Eleanora and Slavica.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Francis Donlan; and his siblings, the Rev. Stephen E. Donlan ESJ, Mary (the late Timothy) Collins, Margaret (the late Philip) Brennan, John (the late Kay) Donlan M.D., William (Rita and the late Jean) Donlan M.D., Catherine (the late Thomas) Cahill, Dorothy Donlan and Eileen (Patrick) Henry.

A funeral Mass was celebrated March 18 at St. Mary Church in Riverside, followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

John P. McGovern, 77, School principal

John Patrick McGovern, a resident of Riverside for 47 years, died March 16, 2008 at his home. He was 77 years old.

A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. McGovern dedicated his life to education. For 35 years, he was principal of Herzl Elementary School in Chicago. He also enjoyed golf, cooking, reading and especially spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by Joanne (nee Huml) McGovern, his wife of 52 years. He is also survived by his children, Mary Lauren (James) Hebein, John (Julie) McGovern, Kerry (Matthew) Duma and Angela (Robert) Franklin; his grandchildren, Rose, Adam, Rebecca, John Patrick, Cathleen, Emily, Jessica, Gregory, Brian, Margaret, Thomas and Matthew; his sisters, Catherine McGovern and Ann Ross; his sisters-in-law, Dolores McGovern and Kathryn McGovern; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. McGovern was preceded in death by his sons, Brian McGovern and Joseph McGovern; his siblings, Gregory McGovern, James McGovern and Rita Heffernan; and his brothers-in-law, Francis Ross and Daniel Heffernan.

A funeral Mass was celebrated March 25 at St. Mary Church in Riverside, followed by interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

Jo P. Morgan-Race, 57, Homemaker

Jo P. Morgan-Race, 57, a resident of Rockford and a former resident of Riverside and Brookfield, died March 19, 2008 at her home.

Born March 29, 1950 to Patrick and Edith (nee Corngold) Morgan, Ms. Morgan-Race is survived by her children, Adrian (Rachel) Race and Jeremy (Bethany) Race; her brother, Bernard Morgan; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held March 22 at Hitzeman Funeral Home in Brookfield, followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Jarmilla Valenta, 98, Worked for publishing co.

Longtime North Riverside resident Jarmilla Valenta (nee Wimmer) died March 19, 2008 at the age of 98.

Prior to her retirement, Ms. Valenta was a clerical worker for the Judy-Berner Publishing Company.

Ms. Valenta is survived by her daughter, Carol McMahon, and her granddaughters, Linda McMahon and Sharon McMahon.

A funeral service was held March 21. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.
