The hunt is still on for the Chicago Catholic League title as the Fenwick tennis team gained ground last week by winning two league matches.
The Friars downed De La Salle 4-1 and Providence 5-0, but lost to Loyola 3-2.
At No. 2 singles, Rob Hickey won a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision over Loyola that placed him as the second ranked player in the conference at that position.
The No. 2 doubles team of Matt Hipskind and Mike Maienza also defeated Loyola 6-2, 6-2, making the Friars the top and undefeated team at that position.
Against De La Salle, Dave Elias won at No. 2 singles, Paul Fitzgerald at No. 3 singles, Marty Mullen and Mike Maienza at No. 1 doubles, and John Bellaire and Brad Krebs at No. 2 doubles.
Fenwick (5-1) takes on Bishop McNamara this Thursday for its final conference dual meet.
Water polo team wins two more
The Fenwick boys water polo team snagged two more wins last week as the Friars continued to make their way to a fifth-straight state championship.
Fenwick downed St. Ignatius 16-8 on Thursday. Andrew McKernin and Chris Wendt led the charge with four goals apiece. Will Shulenberg and Brian Barron added two goals apiece, and Matt Napleton recorded 13 saves in goal.
The Friars also downed Stevenson 13-4 last week. McKernin scored two goals and dished out four assists in the win.
Fenwick is set to compete at the Stevenson Tournament this weekend. The Friars will take on Lake Forest and Naperville Central in a doubleheader on Friday.
Softball team falls back
The Fenwick softball team’s record dropped to 3-8 on the season after a pair of losses to Providence on Saturday.
The Friars lost 17-2 and 4-0 in the doubleheader. Angelica Sanchez and Laura Enriquez both drove in a run in the opener.
On April 16, the Friars lost to Nazareth 9-6. Isabel Sanchez (2-5) took the loss, allowing six runs-two earned-on four hits. The senior struckout three and walked two.
Lauren Donati finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Bridget Ellsworth went 4-for-4 and Courtney Monaco’s double in the third scored a run.
Brookfield Jaycees to host
youth baseball event
The Brookfield Jaycees will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball “Pitch, Hit, & Run” competition for area youth on Sunday at the MAX, located at 4750 South Vernon Avenue in McCook. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and will close at 1:45 pm. The competition will begin promptly at 2 pm.
“Pitch, Hit, & Run” is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. The program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition which recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills. Competitors are divided into four age divisions (ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14) and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition.
