Riverside Brookfield’s Guilia Bova and Brittany Hite won at second doubles 7-5, 6-4.

Fenwick boys cross-country runner Martin Grady led his team to a second place finish at the Sterling Invitational on Saturday.

Grady finished third overall with a time of 15:18 to help Fenwick secure 115 points. Neuqua Valley won the meet with 51 points.

RB volleyball picks up two wins

The Riverside Brookfield volleyball team came from behind to defeat Oak Park 17-25, 25-18, 25-22 last week.

Molly McCloskey led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and nine digs. Regan Riley contributed eight kills in the win. Rachel Buccieri led the team defensively with 14 digs.

The victory came on the heals of a Metro Suburban Conference win over Fenton 25-10, 25-20. Abbie Fralicx dominated at the service line in this game, scoring 10 aces and dishing out eight assists for the Bulldogs.

Friars finish third at ESCC tourney

The Fenwick girls tennis team finished third overall out of the 11 teams at the East Suburban Catholic Conference Meet. Benet won the conference with 94 points, while the Friars garnered 76.

The third doubles team of Christina Janda and Maggie Saltiel advanced to the championship with a win over Providence, but fell to Benet 6-1,6-4 in the final.

Alison Seyfarth and Colleen Bingle defeated Nazareth’s Mary Hoglund and Natalie Bell in the third-place match of first doubles by coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In the medal round of No. 2 singles, Rachel Canfora battled back to defeat Carmel’s Sophia Kannenberg 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

First singles player Aymsley Upp lost a three-hour match in the opening round Friday to the eventual third-place finisher Jackie Marx of St. Viator. Upp went on to win two consolation rounds before falling to Marist’s Shea Hennessy 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation final to finish sixth overall.

The Friars now turn their attention to qualifying for state by doing well at this weekend’s York Sectional.

“It’s almost the same group of teams as last year’s Proviso West Sectional, so being a bit stronger this year, we’re shooting to get two doubles through again, with a singles player for good measure,” said Fenwick head coach Gerard Sullivan.

Sullivan added that he’s hoping for a top-four seed for Upp, as well as Seyfarth and Canfora in doubles action. Seyfarth and Canfora have a 3-0 record and Canfora was a state-qualifier in 2007, going 1-2 in doubles.

Friars swim solid, sink Loyola

The Fenwick swim team was able to wipe a negative blemish off its record books last week. Not since 2002 had the Friars defeated Loyola in the Ramblers’ own pool. That changed on Oct. 7 when the Friars won nine events to score 102 points to their opponent’s 84 points.

Morgan Bonk led Fenwick’s efforts, winning both the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.08) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.03). Along with Stephanie Ovalle, Casey Dollard and Kelly Ryan, Bonk also helped the Friars take home first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.58.

Other winners at Loyola included Ovalle in the 100-yard freestyle (:54.55) and Ryan in the 100-yard butterfly (:59.85).

“[This] is a great, friendly but highly competitive rivalry,” said Fenwick head coach Renee Miller. “We swam very well overall and were very glad to have that win under our belts. The team knew that this would have to be a team effort and they were ready. They knew that we would need every point. Loyola always comes ready to swim tough.”

Miller said due to having tired swimmers on Saturday for the Barrington Invitational, she moved them around to swim in events they normally might not. The Friars still managed to finish third overall at the invite with 259 points.

Fenwick takes second

The Fenwick volleyball team placed second at the Lake Zurich Invitational on Saturday, going 4-1 on the day.

The Friars’ only loss came at the hands of the host in a 20-25, 22-25 defeat. Fenwick defeated Warren, 25-10, 17-25, 25-14, Waukegan, 25-20, 25-19, Lincoln, 25-17, 25-15, and Deerfield, 25-13, 25-22, to make it to the championship game.

Sophomore Sarah Hunt led the Friars, tallying 35 kills on the day. Kelly Brennan finished with 34 kills and eight solo blocks, while senior Margy Acton had 55 digs.
