Brookfield resident Chelsea Doyle won first place in the 11-under category for the Chicago Zoological Society’s 2008 photo contest.

Fluttering butterflies, big cats, graceful giraffes, primates, and bears were among nearly 400 photos submitted by entrants. A panel of professional photographers had the assignment of selecting a grand prize winner, as well as first-, second-, and third-place winners in the adult and child categories.

The winning photos are on display in Brookfield Zoo’s Discovery Center lobby through Nov. 18. They may also be viewed online at www.CZS.org.

The grand prize winner was a photo of Nadaya, one of Brookfield Zoo’s western lowland gorillas, taken by Mark Bates of New Lenox.

He received an airline voucher for round-trip flight for himself and a companion to any destination in the continental United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, served directly by American Airlines.

Fran Pones of LaGrange Park placed second in the adult category.

Ryan Vranek, a Brookfield resident who is a seventh-grader at St. Louise de Marillac School in LaGrange Park has become a certified chess coach through the through a program offered by 2008 U.S. champion Yury Shulman.

As part of the certification process, Vranek helped teach at a summer chess camp in Riverside and tutored local elementary school students. He currently volunteers by helping teach chess at grade schools and has signed up to volunteer at the Plymouth Place retirement community.

As a result of Ryan’s efforts and accomplishments here locally, Shulman’s “Chess Without Borders” organization donated chess boards, chess books and miscellaneous equipment in Ryan’s name during a recent trip to a school in Tirupati, India.

On campus

Katherine Delbecq, an Earlham College senior and daughter of Mary and C. Eric Delbecq of Brookfield, presented research at the sixth annual Earlham College undergraduate research conference on Oct. 21.

Delbecq presented “Moderate Tsunamis and Great Storms Leave Little Sedimentary Evidence in Hokkaido, Japan” and “Sedimentary Evidence For Great Tsunamis Near Tokachi, Hokkaido, Japan.”

Earlham is a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind.
