Bill Ayers, a former 1960s radical activist and fugitive who is now a professor of education at University of Illinois-Chicago, will speak at Riverside Brookfield High School’s Little Theater at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon. Ayers, whose relationship with Barack Obama became an issue in the 2008 presidential campaign, will speak at a meeting of RB’s Forum Club, an after-school student organization at RB that discusses current issues.

Initially the event was intended to be open only to RB students and staff and not to parents, the general public or the media.

However, after hearing complaints from parents about being excluded from the appearance and being urged by board member Jim Marciniak to allow parents to attend, the RB administration has apparently changed its mind and decided to allow at least some parents to attend.

“Some [parents] are going to be let in” said RB Superintendent/Principal Jack Baldermann, though he later amended that statement to “any parent will be let in.”

It is not clear at this time whether other members of the public or the media will be allowed to hear Ayers speak at RB.
