Riverside-Brookfield’s Graham Risley advanced to the IHSA State Meet by winning two events and helping out on a relay at the Fenwick Sectional in Oak Park on Saturday.
The Penn State-bound senior took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.85 seconds. Risley also won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.02 seconds, and helped the 200-yard medley relay team finish third in 1:40.23.
Riverside-Brookfield finished fourth overall at the sectional, garnering 179 points.
The IHSA State Meet will be held at New Trier High School on Friday and Saturday.
Barnhisal a state champ at 152
Fenwick wrestler Bobby Barnhisal battled his way to an impressive 5-0 overtime victory over Kevin Bialka of Lockport to win at 152 pounds at the Class 3A State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
The senior, who was the only wrestler from Fenwick to advance to the state finals, closes out his high school wrestling career with a record of 42-2 this season.
Ryan finishes third at state
Lyons Township wrestler Mike Ryan finished third overall at the Class 3A State Individual Wrestling Tournament held at Assembly Hall in Champaign last week.
Ryan finished third by defeating Trevor Wenmouth of Downers Grove South 10-1 in the 152-pound weight division.
Friars win sectional
The Fenwick swim team won its own sectional on Saturday by accumulating 286 points. The Friars advanced a swimmer to the IHSA State Meet in nine of the 12 events.
Will Rigali won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.01, and placed second in the 100 freestyle in 48.15 seconds. Teammate Matt Napleton won the 100 free with a time of 47.36 seconds.
Brian Barron won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.59, and also qualified in the 200-yard individual medley by placing second with a time of 1:58.56. Dan Barron finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.40 seconds. Senior Chris Wendt took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.28 seconds for the Friars, who won all three relay events.
LT’s Urben wins balance beam
Lyons Township gymnast Emily Urben took first place on the balance beam at the IHSA State Gymnastics Meet at Palatine High School on Saturday.
Urben earned a score of 9.575 in the even.
Other notable LT finishes included Kristi Carling on the uneven bars (sixth, 9.325) and Taylor Southworth on the balance beam (sixth, 9.2).
Lyons finished sixth overall with a final team score of 146.200.
