The Fenwick girls soccer team might want to think of last season as a warm-up year. The team went 8-12-1 overall and 4-6 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. The same team is relatively back this season, and that one year of playing together, working out the quirks and finding the chemistry, should have an impact for this campaign.

Back is the entire central midfield of Ellie Galvin, Colleen Hussey and Serafina Nuzzo, who starred on the Fenwick basketball team. Galvin and Hussey were all-conference players last season. Also returning are defenders Mary Kate Hussey, Megan Frank and standout sweeper Mia Patrevito, who were all freshmen last year.

Fenwick head coach Chris Richter has moved Rachel Canfora from forward to goalkeeper this season.

“Her development will influence our success this year,” said Richter of Canfora, now a senior.

Senior defenders Stephanie Jaslowski and Sara Payne, who both missed most of last season due to injuries, are also expected to make a significant impact this year.

Marquette-bound senior forward Carly Smith will play her first season of high school soccer, while freshman midfielder Audrey Galvin has an outside chance to be a force as early as this year, according to Richter.

“This is easily the deepest team that Fenwick has rostered in some time,” he said. “We’re still going to be incredibly young; however, the competition for playing time is creating very competitive practices. That’s helping everyone on the team get ‘game conditions’ in practice so we’re maturing as fast as you could hope.”

The Friars open the season at Riverside-Brookfield on Friday, March 20 (6:30 p.m.). They’ll host Nazareth on March 30 at the Dominican Priory (4:30 p.m.) and travel to Trinity on April 28 for the Catholic League Challenge opener.
