Riverside police, assisted by the West Suburban Directed Gang Enforcement (WEDGE) task force, charged a Berwyn man with dealing drugs after serving a search warrant at his home on March 12.
Jeffrey M. Benes, 32, remained in Cook County Jail as of Monday with bond set at $20,000. He has been charged with four felony counts, including possession of cannabis, possession of a controlled substance and manufacture/delivery of cannabis and a controlled substance.
Riverside Detective Sgt. David Krull said that police got the warrant “based on information WEDGE developed that the subject was dealing drugs.”
Police detained Benes just before 12:30 p.m. during a traffic stop near his home. Later that evening, they searched his residence in the 2300 block of Ridgeland Avenue and reportedly recovered 891 grams (nearly two pounds) of cannabis and 14 grams of cocaine, scales and packaging materials.
Guns found during DUI arrest
Maywood resident Clarence Dolley, 60, faces a felony weapons charge in addition to drunk driving charges after Riverside police pulled him over for allegedly driving the wrong way down Bloomingbank Road in front of the Riverside train station on March 14 at 7:42 p.m.
Police reported that Dolley was so intoxicated they had to help him stand. After Dolley failed field sobriety tests, police said they found two unloaded revolvers, a .357-caliber and a .45-caliber inside, one on the front floor and one between the two front seats.
Police also reported finding ammunition inside the vehicle and in Dolley’s pants pockets. Police said they also found two rifles in their cases in the rear of the 2003 Dodge van Dolley was driving.
Dolley’s blood-alcohol was reportedly .268, which is over three times the legal limit of .08.
Riverside police charged Cicero resident Leroy Cech, 47, with felony DUI after police stopped his green Dodge pickup truck in the 100 block of Pine Avenue for having two broken tail lights.
According to police, Cech’s license had been revoked for a previous DUI conviction. After reportedly failing field sobriety tests, Cech was arrested.
Brookfield police charged Ashley Avila, 22, of Berwyn with DUI after an officer stopped her for allegedly driving her 2000 Plymouth Neon 42 mph in a 30 mph zone while eastbound in the 9200 block of Maple Avenue at 3 a.m. on March 3.
According to police Avila’s blood-alcohol level was .216, which is nearly three times the legal limit. In addition to DUI, she was cited for speeding and having no proof of insurance.
Car missing from dealer lot
An employee from Castle Buick, 7400 Cermak Road in North Riverside, reported to police on March 9 that a 2009 metallic blue Pontiac G6 was missing from the lot. According to the report, the car was accounted for on Feb. 1 and again on Feb. 9 when it was shown to a customer at the dealership. However, on March 9 the car was nowhere to be found on the lot, despite the fact that both sets of keys were accounted for. Police contacted the company responsible for the vehicle’s global positioning system, but were told the GPS unit had been disabled.
North Riverside police also reported that during the overnight hours of March 10-11, a 2006 Dodge Charger parked in the lot at Castle Buick had all four wheels removed. The car, which had been outfitted with tires sporting 22-inch rims, was left on concrete blocks.
Drug possession
Cicero resident Saul Guerrero, 32, faces a felony drug charge after Brookfield police stopped him while driving eastbound in the 8800 block of Ogden Avenue with just one headlight and no rear license plate light.
A computer check also showed that Guerrero was wanted on a failure-to-appear warrant by DuPage County Sheriff’s Police. A search of Guerrero’s 1999 Nissan reportedly turned up a digital scale covered with white powder and a glass pipe with cannabis residue. Police also reported finding a small amount of cocaine concealed in the waistband of Guerrero’s underwear.
In addition to possession of a controlled substance, Guerrero was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and vehicle compliance tickets.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments from March 3 through March 15 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not been adjudicated.
