The Riverside-Brookfield volleyball team finished second at the Plainfield North Tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs went 2-2 in pool play, falling to Joliet Township 25-23, 19-25, 16-25 in the title game.
Pete Jansen led RB with eight kills, an ace and seven digs. Matt Gehrke and Juan Gomez each finished with nine kills apiece. Eliot Louthen paced the offense with 18 assists, an ace and four digs.
Friars fall to Larkin
The Fenwick soccer team downed Larkin 4-1 in the Pepsi Showdown on Saturday.
The Friars (3-1) scored four unanswered goals in the win. Carly Smith, Clare Madden, Morgan Gallagher and Alyssa Giacalone all scored for Fenwick.
The Friars fell to Hersey 1-0 to open the tournament on Thursday.
On March 25, the Friars downed Morton 2-1. Gallagher scored both goals for Fenwick.
Weinberg takes over for Derning
Kurt Weinberg, who coached at Highland Park last season, has replaced the retired Jack Derning as Lyons Township’s new head football coach.
Under Weinberg, Highland Park made six straight IHSA playoff appearances. His Class 6/7A record currently stands at 53-39, with two conference championships and a trip to the state quarterfinals.
“I know the level of success at all levels is strong at LT,” said Weinberg through a press release issued by the school. “I will try to add to an already strong tradition of Lion football.”
Lyons Township Athletic Director John Grundke said Weinberg was a perfect fit for LT.
“He represents all of the qualities that we’re looking for in a head coach,” he said. “We look forward to many years of his leadership and added success to our program.”
Fenwick softball edges Lane
Bridget Ellsworth’s game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning led the Fenwick softball team to a 6-5 victory over Lane on Friday.
The Friars kicked off the season by winning three games in a row. They host Northside Prep at the Dominican Priory on Friday (4:30 p.m.) and St. Francis Wheaton (11 a.m.) on Saturday.
