Around the horn
You put on your suit, goggles, swim cap, jump into the pool and win a game. It’s become quite an ordinary sequence of events for the Fenwick boys water polo team, who claimed its sixth-straight Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference Championship on Saturday with a 15-8 victory over Brother Rice. The victory also was the team’s 27th in a row this season, and the program’s 49th-straight carried over from last year. Fenwick is also vying for its sixth consecutive state title.
Craig Borkovec led the charge against Brother Rice, scoring four goals and pocketing three steals. Chris Wendt and Jon Osborne tallied three goals apiece for the Friars.
Fenwick opened the tournament with a 20-1 thrashing of De La Salle. In the semifinals, both Borkovec and Wendt scored five goals apiece to lead their team to a 22-4 mauling of Loyola.
The Friars open their own sectional against Maine South on Thursday (May 14). The sectional championship is scheduled for Saturday at Fenwick (1:30 p.m.).
RB baseball
The Riverside-Brookfield baseball team went 4-1 in Metro Suburban Conference action last week.
The Bulldogs (16-11, 8-2) shut out Ridgewood in three straight games before splitting a doubleheader against Elmwood Park on Saturday. Riverside-Brookfield lost the opener 3-0 on Saturday, but regrouped to crush the Tigers 8-2.
Fenwick soccer
The Fenwick soccer team erased a two-goal deficit to defeat Providence 3-2 on Saturday. Carly Smith notched a hat-trick of three goals for the Friars, who improved to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
The Friars opened the week with a 2-0 loss to Benet.
Fenwick tennis
The Fenwick tennis team moved to within one match of an undefeated Chicago Catholic League season by defeating Bishop McNamara 3-1 last week.
The No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Kiefer and Rob Hickey won 6-1, 6-2. Other winners for Fenwick included Ted Bruce (No. 2 singles) and Dominic Campagna (No. 3 singles). Mike Pill suffered his second loss of the week in a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at No. 1 singles.
Fenwick also defeated University High 3-1 last week.
Youth sports
Ben Chmura tossed a no-hit shutout in five innings for the Riverside Little League Mets (9-10 year olds) last week.
Chmura tallied 14 strikeouts and walked one in the five innings.
