The Fenwick boys and girls water polo teams overpowered their rival Oak Park to sweep the Fenwick Sectional on Saturday.

The Fenwick boys water polo team, which has yet to lose a game in 50 contests, downed Oak Park by a score of 18-3. The Fenwick girls team countered that with a 25-7 walloping of its cross-town rival.

Chris Wendt led the Fenwick boys team with five goals, while Craig Borkovec added four and Brian Barron three. Dan Barron and John Osborne each chipped in two goals apiece, while Mark Ryden and Will Rigali both added one apiece.

“We defeated a feisty Oak Park team,” said Fenwick head coach Dave Perry. “In the end, our defense made the difference. The score did not reflect the intensity of the game. It seemed like it was a two or three-goal game throughout.”

Fenwick made it to the finals by defeating St. Patrick 15-4. In that game, Brian Barron led with six goals, while Wendt added five.

The Friars, who haven’t lost a game since March 20, 2008 -to a Florida team – are vying for their sixth consecutive state title. They’ve collected 28-straight wins this season.

The state quarterfinals begin on Friday at Stevenson High School.

Tommy Poulos led OPRF with two goals and Armando Lee added one.

“Although the score was 18-3, this was an intense and highly contested game each play down the pool,” said Oak Park head coach Tom Nickels, who loses one senior in Ross Brinkman to graduation. “The officials allowed very physical play, which benefited Fenwick’s style. Even though the play seemed more like a rugby match than a water polo game, our guys never stopped playing. The Huskies fought every second.”

Morgan Bonk led the Fenwick girls water polo team with a whopping 10 goals. Lisett Calderon helped out the cause with five of her own. Katie Tynan added four and Emma McKernin three.

The Huskies were led by Audrey Reardon, who finished with six goals. Claire Helwig scored a goal for Oak Park, which opened the playoffs by thumping Maine East 24-4. Reardon scored 10 goals in that lopsided victory. Lori Mansfield added three goals, while Christine Slowiak and Kimmy Stefanik each finished with two apiece.

Jenna Kirk, Katie Hunt, Shannon Kooser, Emily Freeland, Helwig, Alison Coogan and Elena Michaels each chipped in a goal apiece.
