Among the first women lifeguards in U.S., before she married she worked as a field representative, swimming and water safety instructor for the Red Cross. She loved her seaside home in Shippan Point, Conn., where she swam frequently and tended a vegetable garden. For her 80th birthday, she bought a kayak.

She was director of religious education for the Unitarian Universalist Society in Stamford from 1961-65, and over the years was active in local organizations ranging from Girl Scouts to Stamford Citizens Concerned about Nuclear Arms and Meals on Wheels.
As manager of community relations at Pitney Bowes for 13 years, Ms. Scanley was a powerful presence in Stamford, making crucial judgments on where the company, Stamford’s largest employer, should place its resources.
In preparation for her retirement, she earned a certificate in landscape design from the New York Botanical Garden, building on her extensive experience as a gardener. She was a visible supporter in the local arts scene with her longtime partner, David Burt, a founding member of the Stamford Loft Artists Association.
