The Lyons Township football team dropped a West Suburban Conference cross-over game to Leyden 14-10 on Friday night in Northlake.

The Lions (5-3) let slip a 10-7 lead in the final minutes of the game when Leyden quarterback David Rose tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Dan Kiebler.

Lyons scored first on a Ryan Mitchell to J.D. Heinz 12-yard touchdown pass. Brian Kelley upped LT’s advantage to 10-7 with a 24-yard field goal before halftime.

The Lions close out the regular season at home on Friday night against undefeated Glenbard West (8-0, 5-0).

LT tennis

The Lions finished second at their own sectional on Saturday. Doubles players Hadley Burke, Alexis Reisch, Madeline Barnabee and Stephanie Eastman qualified for the state tournament. Tina Harazin qualified in singles play.

Fenwick boys cross-country

Martin Grady led the Friars to a second place finish at the Chicago Catholic League Meet on Saturday.

Grady finished second overall with a time of 15 minutes flat, three seconds off winner Nick Composto of Loyola.

Bill Toohey finished seventh (15:49) and Steve Blazer 10th (16:09) for the Friars.

LT soccer

The Lyons Township soccer team closed out its regular season schedule with a 2-1 win over Benet on Saturday. Peter Gabrek and Chris Meingast each had a goal and an assist for Lyons.

The win brought the Lions’ overall record to 19-3.

Fenwick tennis

The Fenwick tennis team qualified two doubles teams for the upcoming state meet.

Audrey Kiefer and Christina Janda finished second at the York Sectional on Saturday, while Julie Comfort and Mia Mastrangeli placed fourth.

As a team, the Friars tied Trinity for second at the sectional with 14 points.

After a first round bye, Kiefer and Janda posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Leyden, then eked out a narrow 6-4, 7-5 win over the higher seeded Fenton. The duo had an easier time dispatching the top seed in the semifinals, beating York’s No. 1 pair 7-6, 6-3. They lost in the final to York 6-3, 6-2.

Comfort and Mastrangeli advanced to the semifinals with wins over Addison Trail and Trinity.

LT boys golf

The Lions finished sixth as a team at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament held at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.

Kevin Workman led the Lions by finishing tied for 17th with a two-round score of 156.

The Lions finished second in the Mt. Carmel Sectional held at Glenwoodie Golf Course. Kyle Mulcahy and Workman led the way by both shooting 5-over par 77s. Others who contributed in the runner-up finish at sectional included Kevin Carlson (78), Terrence Silvey (81), Austin Lusson (84) and Tomas VenClovas (84).

Fenwick boys golf

Mike Sullivan finished tied for 48th overall at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament. Sullivan posted three birdies in his final round. He finished the two-round tournament with a 162. Mike Kwasigroch finished tied for 51st with a 163. Kwasigroch shot a 38 on the front nine.

LT girls golf

Sophomore Katie Ellis finished 69th overall at the Class AA State Golf Meet held at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale. Ellis posted an 81 at the St. Ignatius Sectional held at Cog Hill No. 1 to advance to the state tournament.

Fenwick swimming

The Friars finished first in a nine-team tournament last week. The Friars accumulated 422 points, while Sandburg finished second with 390.

Fenwick’s Kelly Ryan won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.38) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.91 seconds).

LT/Fenwick lacrosse

The IHSA announced last week that its board of directors approved a recommendation to adopt an official state series for boys and girls lacrosse beginning with the 2010-11 school term.

The official IHSA lacrosse season, state series and state finals will be contested during the spring semester.

Lyons Township and Fenwick high schools have lacrosse programs.
