For too long the building which I have referred to as the “grand old dame of Riverside,” formally known as the Arcade Building, has stood on the corner of Quincy and Riverside Road looking lonely and neglected.
A victim of the economy and, allegedly, of a giant Ponzi scheme, the building could be looking at a brighter future due in part to an innovative project of the village of Riverside and the RB High School art department for what is being called the Riverside.
The challenge for the 48 drawing and painting students has been to design, create and paint the 17 massive panels which cover over 2,100 square feet. The artists were given the chance to learn about the history of the village and the building. They even toured it before beginning the task
Bob Faust of Riverside (and an RB grad) of Faust Design has been instrumental in helping the students as have members of the board of the Riverside Arts Center. A project of this magnitude has grown to include the RB Photo and Art Club, as well as students from St. Mary’s, Hauser Junior High and Gross Middle School students, along with art department aides.
Currently the panels are at the high school; the paintings focus on the theme of the four seasons in Riverside. Made of multi-plywood, the students began the work last week plan to continue working the project days, evenings and weekends When completed the panels will be sealed and hung in time for Riverside’s Holiday Stroll. They’ll remain in place until such time as there is another phase in the life of the “grand old dame.”
It will also give the students a chance to showcase their talents and be a reflection of students and communities working together – a truly educational hands-on experience from which we will all benefit.
