The Fenwick girls swim team swept the field at its own sectional on Saturday in Oak Park, clearing the way for another possible top 10 finish or better at state.
Kelly Ryan and Veronica Gibson led the charge for the Friars, combing to place first in four events. Ryan, a senior, won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.22) and the 100-yard backstroke (57.21 seconds). Gibson, a sophomore, took first in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.72) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.56 seconds).
Ryan also helped the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.98) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.83) finish first. Stephanie Ovalle, Muareen Barron, Casey Dollard also swan in both events. Ovalle qualified in the 100-yard freestyle by winning the event in 53.66 seconds. Jackie Woods took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.93.
“Our focus this week was to get as many swimmers and relays qualified for next week’s state meet,” said Fenwick head coach Renee Miller. “We are not fully rested, so swimmers sometimes struggle swimming fast at this point in their taper. We were very successful in qualifying in every event and we are very excited about that.”
Mary Kate Campbell won the diving event with a score of 472.85, a new pool record.
The Friars now turn their attention to improving on last season’s ninth place finish at state.
“We hope [this] sets us up to achieve our goal of being top six at the state meet,” said Miller.
The IHSA Girls State Swim Meet begins Friday at New Trier High School in Winnetka.
LT swimming
The Lyons Township swim team took first place and qualified several swimmers for state at its own sectional on Saturday.
The Lions garnered a score of 347 with the help of first-place finishers Hillary Weigand (200 freestyle, 1:57.16; 500 freestyle, 5:10.77), Elizabeth Kosin (100 butterfly, 59.55 seconds), Gigi Groya (100 freestyle, 52.43)and Madeleine Moeller (100 breaststroke, 1:07.24).
Other state qualifiers for LT included Jennifer Weigand (500 freestyle, 5:10.78), Erika Ronning (100 freestyle, 53.07) and Kristi Carling (diving, 421.10).
RB swimming
Riverside-Brookfield’s Amanda Gregus qualified for the IHSA Girls State Swim Meet by finishing third in the 100 freestyle at the Lyons Sectional on Saturday.
Gregus timed out at 53.82 seconds in the event.
As a team, RB finished fourth at the sectional with a final score of 166.
LT volleyball
The Lyons Township volleyball team battled Cary-Grove in the Class 4A State Championship held in Normal on Saturday but came up short, falling 25-23, 25-17 to finish runner-up.
The Lions forced the Trojans into seven ties during the first game with the help of Jocelynn Birks, who finished with a team-high eights kills in the match.
Lyons closes out the season with an impressive 37-5 overall record. During the regular season, the team put together a 27-match winning streak.
LT tennis
Lyons Township senior Christina Harazin, who finished third in singles action at the IHSA State tournament this season, signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Iowa.
