The Riverside-Brookfield wrestling team pushed its record to 4-4 last weekend by grabbing three victories in five matches.
On Friday, the Bulldogs upset Glenbard South 35-21 and crushed Walther Lutheran 60-15. The following day, RB picked up a 63-15 victory over Hubbard but fell 46-24 to Vernon Hills and 60-12 to Hinsdale Central.
Seniors Chris Russell (140-pound weight class, 7-1 record) and Juan Gomez (189, 6-2) both went 5-0 on the weekend. Junior Mike Abbatacola (103, 6-2) and Eduardo Orihuela (125, 6-2) both finished 4-1.
The Bulldogs travel to the Buffalo Grove Invitational on Saturday.
RB girls basketball
The Riverside-Brookfield girls basketball team clobbered Elmwood Park 58-36 last week. The Bulldogs led 45-19 by halftime.
Shaquita Slater finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Hutchens added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who travel to Timothy Christian on Thursday (6 p.m.) for a Metro Suburban Conference match-up.
Fenwick girls basketball
The Fenwick girls basketball team kicked-off its quest for a 16th-straight East Suburban Catholic Conference title by toppling Bishop McNamara 62-42 on Saturday night.
Senior forward Tricia Liston had a big night for the Friars (8-0, 1-0) with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
On Thursday, the Friars crushed 12th-ranked Loyola 67-28 behind Liston’s 24 points. The Ramblers were without starters Meghan NcKeown (hamstring) and Katie Faught (concussion), and the Friars took advantage of the mismatch from the first quarter on.
Liston scored 20 points in the first half alone. The Duke-bound senior also finished with six rebounds, three steals and three assists before being taken out in the third quarter.
Kyra Navarrete added seven points and six rebounds for the Friars, who host Benet tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.).
The Friars travel to Nazareth on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game.
LT gymnastics
The Lyons Township girls gymnastics team finished second at the Mike Williams Big Purple Invitational on Saturday.
Kristi Carling finished second in the all-around with a score of 9.0675.
Fenwick wrestling
Two Fenwick wrestlers won their bouts at the Hinsdale South Invitational on Saturday.
Matt Garelli won at 103 pounds and Jayson Heredia won at 140.
The Friars finished sixth overall (126) in the 12-team tournament.
Fenwick hockey
The Friars went 2-1 at the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase held in Jamestown, N.Y. over the weekend.
Fenwick fell to Holy Ghost Prep 3-2 on Saturday. Fenwick was trailing 3-1 when Aiden Verbeke’s goal with 38 seconds cut the lead to one and the Friars nearly tied the game at the buzzer.
Matt Crook led Fenwick in a 5-4 victory over North Broward Prep (Fla.) in the first game. Crook scored two goals in the win, while Verbeke added a goal and two assists.
Fenwick crushed McDowell Prep (Penn.) 7-3. The Friar forward line of Ryan Fitzgerald (2 goals, 3 assists), Brendan Fitzgerald (goal, 3 assists) and Kale Johnstone (3 assists) dominated the game.
The Friars went 2-1-1 at the Loyola Thanksgiving Tournament.
Fenwick downed York 5-4 to open the tournament. Greyson Feichtinger broke a 4-4 tie in the third period with a pinpoint deflection off a Brendan Conroy shot.
Fenwick also racked up a victory against Barrington 8-2. Nick Chiappetta had 20 saves in the win.
Trailing 4-1 to Indiana powerhouse Hamilton Southeast in the third period, the Friars came back to force a tie. Feichtinger scored with .9 seconds remaining to knot the game at 5-5. Karl Langhans finished with 25 saves in the draw.
Fenwick’s only loss came to eventual tournament champ New Trier Green, who downed the Friars 7-2.
Verbeke was named to the All-tournament team.
