A woman walked into the Jewel-Osco store in North Riverside Thursday night and robbed the TCF Bank branch inside, North Riverside police have reported.

According to investigators, the woman entered the store, 7201 24th St., just before 8 p.m. and approached the counter. She handed the teller a note indicating she was armed and demanded money, police said. No weapon was displayed during the robbery.

It’s unclear whether the woman spoke to the teller during the hold up.

“There’s no information regarding any conversation,” said Police Chief Anthony Garvey.

After being handed an undisclosed amount of cash, the woman fled the scene before police arrived. The suspect is described as a black female between 45 to 50 years old and between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5. She was wearing a brown wool hat, glasses, a dark coat with white fur around the collar, jeans and tall black boots that were described as “worn.”

North Riverside police notified the FBI of the robbery and agents responded to the store. Both agencies continue to investigate the case.

Garvey said that police may have a vehicle description as well, but are reviewing additional security footage.

The TCF branch inside the North Riverside Jewel has been robbed on three previous occasions, most recently in January 2004. It was also held up in April 2003 and June 2002.
