Riverside-Brookfield High School junior Charlie Morrissey tied for third place in the Class 3A three-point King of the Hill competition at the basketball state finals in Peoria on Friday. Morrissey, a 6-foot 2-inch guard on RB’s basketball team made nine out of 15 three pointers in the final round Friday afternoon.

Joey Miller of Charlestown won the 3A title three-point shooting title, hitting 12 of 15. Connor Wheeler of Carbondale finished second, making 10. Morrissey tied with Jordan Brink from conference rival Illiana Christian High School.

Thursday evening Morrissey, who ranks 13th in the junior class at RB with 4.6 grade-point average, made 12 out of 15 three pointers to advance to the four-person finals.

Coincidentally, Riverside resident Bill Hitt is handling color commentary for the television broadcast of the 3A semifinals and finals this weekend. Hitt used to coach boys basketball at Proviso East and he led the Pirates to consecutive state basketball championships in 1991 and 1992.

In other state basketball final news, Marshall High School, which beat RB in an overtime thriller in the sectional semifinal game, lost Friday afternoon to Peoria Richwoods 67-61 in the Class 3A semifinal.
