The new head coach of the Fenwick girls soccer team knows a thing or two about the sport. Daryl Shore was an assistant coach for the Chicago Fire for 10 years and has coached the Fire’s youth program for the last six. He even played at the professional level.
Shore replaces Chris Richter, who stepped down for personal reasons. He inherits a young team that finished 15-8-2 last season. Returning starters include a bevy of talented juniors in Megan Frank (midfielder), Clare Madden (forward), Audrey Galvin (midfielder), Audrey Kiefer (forward), Mary Kate Hussey (defender) and Mia Patrevito (defender). Goalkeeper Sidney Galvez-Daley, a sophomore, also returns.
Shore said he’s looking forward to some key additions to the team in Jane Tedesco (midfielder), Molly Sutton (forward) and Meredith St. Clair, a sophomore midfielder.
“These three should help us immensely. They’re very talented and they give us some depth,” he said.
The Friars began the season last week on not such a good note, falling to St. Viator 3-1. But Shore says with a little time and more practice outdoors, the chemistry will set in and the team will be more comfortable with one another and with his coaching philosophies.
“We’re going to be solid defensively in games to come,” he said. “We also have three very good central midfielders, and need to utilize them. Also, I feel our forwards will be very productive this year.”
Others expected to see playing time this season include seniors Alley Adeli, Allanah Mannix-Slobig and Allyssa Giaccolone. The Friars also have two freshmen on the team in Lizzie Cusick and Molly Wallach.
The Friars travel to Morton today (Wednesday, March 24) and York on Tuesday. They’ll take on Lincoln Way East in the first round of the Pepsi Showdown on April 6, which will also be their home opener at the Dominican Priory (4:45 p.m.).
