The Brookfield Kiwanis Club on May 19 held its annual banquet to honor local students. Four $1,000 college scholarships were presented to high school seniors, including Michelle Michaud and Margaret Heraty of Riverside-Brookfield High School and Nicholas Schwerin and James Scigala of Lyons Township High School.

Each year there are as many as 20 applicants, of which several are selected to receive scholarships of $500 and $1,000.

In addition, the Kiwanis Club presented Outstanding Eighth-Grader awards to four students, including Anthony Reyes (St. Louise), Briana Hensel (S.E. Gross), Paraskeva Savas (Park Junior High) and Jon Correa (St. Barbara).

Selection was based on academic achievement, responsibility, cooperation, personality and respectfulness.

Finally, one student – Connor Winkler of S.E. Gross Middle School – was honored with a Brought Up Grades award for scholastic improvement. The BUG program is a motivational program administered by the Kiwanis Club at Gross Middle School and Congress Park School for students in fifth through eighth grades.
