Riverside police and officers from the West Suburban Directed Gang Enforcement task force arrested four people last week who they say have been involved in the sale of marijuana in Riverside and to Riverside-Brookfield High School students in particular.

Two of those arrested, a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy, both from Riverside, are RB students, said Police Chief Thomas Weitzel. Both were charged with possession of cannabis.

Meanwhile, Chicago resident Alfred Ortega, 24, was charged with possession of cannabis, unlawful delivery of cannabis and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, while a 17-year-old boy from Cicero was charged with possession of cannabis and unlawful delivery of cannabis.

On Aug. 25, police working a drug investigation reported seeing the two Riverside juveniles standing in front of an apartment building at 284 E. Quincy St. A Hyundai automobile pulled up and the two juveniles handed a package to someone inside the vehicle, according to police.

When the Hyundai began to drive off, police stopped it. Officers arrested the two Riverside juveniles and the two people – Ortega and the 17-year-old Cicero boy -inside the car.

Police reported finding inside the car a large plastic bag containing 49.2 grams of cannabis, all of it packaged for delivery. Police also reported finding another 3.35 grams of cannabis in a prescription bottle.

Boy robbed of bike in North Riverside

Two 17-year-old boys from Broadview were charged with robbery after they allegedly knocked a 12-year-old North Riverside boy from his bike and then stole it from him on Aug. 23 just before 2 p.m.

North Riverside police said the victim was riding his bike with a friend near 9th Avenue and 25th Street when they were approached by a group of other boys. Two of the group approached the North Riverside boys, saying, “Give up your bikes now or we’ll get you later.”

After taking the bike from one of the boys, the group fled. However, police were able to track down the two suspects, and both were in custody later that evening. The stolen bike was not recovered immediately.

In addition to robbery, both suspects were charged with battery and were petitioned to juvenile authorities.

Brookfield burglary roundup

Some time between 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 and 9 a.m. on Aug. 29 someone entered the garage of a home in the 3200 block of Raymond Avenue and removed a 10-inch power miter saw, an electric drill and a belt sander from a work bench. The total value of the missing items is estimated to be under $500.

Police responded to Tischler Foods, 9118 Broadview Ave., on Aug. 24 after a Brookfield man reported that between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. someone broke into his 1995 Buick, which was parked in the lot, and removed an iPod.

A resident of the 3500 block of Madison Avenue reported that during the overnight hours of Aug. 26 and 27, someone entered a 2005 Hyundai parked on the street and removed a Garmin global positioning system unit.

Between Aug. 20 and Aug. 23, someone entered the unlocked garage of a home in the 4100 block of Deyo Avenue, and removed a purple and pink Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike valued at $250.

A resident of the 9500 block of Henrietta Avenue reported to police that some time between 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 28 someone entered the unlocked garage and removed a white Cannondale Synapse road bike valued at $3,500.

During the overnight hours of Aug. 27-28, someone entered the unlocked garage of a home in the 9100 block of Fairview Avenue and removed a brown 1976 Raleigh Grand Prix 10-speed bike and a set of Mizuno golf clubs.

DUI hit and run

Brookfield police charged Berwyn resident Florencio Ramirez, 34, with driving under the influence and several traffic offenses after he reportedly drove his 2001 Ford pickup into a car parked in the vicinity of Jackson and Park avenues and drove off.

Police reported spotting Ramirez behind the wheel of the truck and driving erratically on eastbound Ogden Avenue. An officer pulled over the truck, which had damage to both the driver and passenger sides, in the 8400 block of Ogden Avenue.

Ramirez’s blood-alcohol level was reportedly .176, which is more than twice the legal limit of .08.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments from Aug. 23 to Aug. 29 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
