The Lyons Township volleyball team earned its second straight trip to the Class 4A State Tournament by downing Marist 25-21, 25-10 on Saturday to capture the Thornton Fractional South Supersectional Championship.

Lyons (38-1), who will take on West Suburban (Silver) Conference foe York in the state quarterfinals on Friday (7:30 p.m.) at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena in Normal, was led by Jocelynn Birks. The Illinois-bound senior racked up 11 kills. Alexis Viliunas finished with 14 assists to go along with four kills.

Laura Williams led the Lions to a 25-13, 25-17 win over St. Ignatius for the Lyons Township Sectional title. Williams finished with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Birks finished with 14 kills.

In the semifinal, the Lions downed conference rival Oak Park 25-10, 25-11. Birks led the Lions with 11 kills and Julia Watkins added five and two blocks. Viliunas finished with four kills and 12 assists, while Erin Juley added four aces and 14 assists.

The Class 4A State Championship is scheduled for Saturday at 9 p.m.

LT soccer

The Lyons Township soccer team’s season came to an end last week with a 3-2 loss in double overtime to Naperville North in the Hinsdale Central Supersectional. Lyons, who held the No. 1 ranking in the state for much of the season, was forced to play without top player Horacio Sanchez, who received a red card in the sectional final.

Austin Wolff scored in the final minute to tie the score and send the game into OT. Naperville North’s Max Auden scored the game-winner in the extra period.

Lyons, who won the Class 3A State championship last season, closes the season with a stellar 22-2-2 overall record.

LT boys cross-country

Sam Telfer led the Lions to a ninth place finish at the Class 3A State Meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday.

Telfer finished eighth overall with a time of 14:34. Other top finishers for LT included Mark Holt (65th, 15:11), Michael Matusiak (90th, 15:19) and Chris Pilipiszyn (102nd, 15:24).

LT girls cross-country

The Lions finished 17th at the Class 3A State Meet on Saturday. Senior Carly Rocco finished 57th overall with a time of 17:51.

Alex Daemicke and Haley Prokaski finished 110th and 111th respectively in the field of 208 runners.
