KOSEY CORNER
Much of what makes a community are the various service organizations within that community. Among the most recognizable in our area is the Riverside Township Lions Club.
Noted for its philanthropic work within the township, the Lions are also known for their work on projects selected by the state and national organization. Locally, we see them selling candy, conducting a July 4 raffle, hosting the annual chicken dinner, and setting up boxes to collect old eyeglasses. The club also participates in the selection of the “Person of the Year” with the Riverside Chamber of Commerce.
For the past few years, the Lions Club has also selected a person to receive the Bill Jansky Distinguished Citizen Award, named in honor of the late Bill Jansky who was an active member of the Lions and an active citizen in Riverside.
Among past members have been Richard Ray, David Bonnette, Evelyn Scott and last year’s recipient, Nancy Dvorak. Dvorak was known to many children in the area for her years as the preschool teacher at the Riverside Presbyterian Church. She was also active with the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She also is known for her smile.
While she is no longer teaching, Dvorak is active in many areas, proving once again you don’t “retire,” you transition to other things.
This year, the Jansky award will go to Ken Kuratko, who has on his resume, among other things, teacher, funeral director and auxiliary policeman for the village of Riverside.
In recognition of his service to the community, Kuratko will be honored by the Lions at their January meeting. His name will be added to a plaque bearing the names of other recipients and will be displayed at the Riverside Township Hall.
Off to a good start: Hope you all had a safe and happy New Year as did we. What would New Year’s Eve be for the Koseys without ushering in the New Year at the Chew Chew?
Owner Scott Zimmer outdid himself this year with a menu to please the palate. This year there was the addition of dancing to go along with appetizers, a champagne toast, hats and horns (I’m still wearing my crown) and a balloon drop at midnight.
Yep, we were dancing fools and able to move the next day. Now that’s a good way to start the year.
