The Lyons Township boys basketball team was certainly busy last week picking up three wins in five days. While the Lions still have plenty to play for at Proviso West this Friday (6 p.m.) – specifically a chance to complete an undefeated West Suburban (Silver) Conference run – the team already appears prepped for the postseason.

The Lions’ 55-53 win over highly regarded Proviso East at UIC on Saturday provided an impressive reminder that LT can beat any team in the area. Tied at 53-53, LT guard Spencer Mahoney broke free for a game-winning layup in the closing seconds. The lanky 6-foot-4 senior guard finished with 11 points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds.

“We had a lot of different options on the play,” Mahoney said. “We all were just trying to find somebody open. They ended up doubling Eric [Powers] on the ball. I just cut to the middle and was lucky enough to lay the ball in off a great pass from Eric.”

Proviso East opened the game with an 11-2 run before LT coach Tom Sloan called a timeout to allow the Lions a breather.

“I think we were a bit antsy for this game,” Mahoney said. “Once we realized that they were just another team on our schedule, I think we relaxed and played within ourselves.”

Lyons (22-2, 11-0) closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run to pull within 13-12. The Lions dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Pirates 18-9. The stanza was highlighted by a Dylan Fiedler (14 points) layup at the buzzer to seize a 30-22 halftime lead.

Nick Zeisloft (11 points, 3 assists) nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend the Lions’ lead to 40-28 midway through the third quarter before Proviso East (19-5) pulled within 44-38 at the end of the period.

“We had to handle their pressure and keep them off the boards,” Zeisloft said. “At times, we got a little shaky but we did a pretty good job in both those categories.”

In the fourth quarter, Proviso East guard Keith Carter came to life and scored seven points, including a three-pointer to whittle the LT lead to 53-51 with 3:15 left in the game. Sterling Brown, the brother of L.A. Lakers guard Shannon Brown, tied the score at 55-55 on an inside basket at the 2:19 mark. The 6-foot-5 sophomore had 14 points and eight rebounds, while 6-6 junior Trashaun Carroll added 12 points and six boards for the Pirates.

Lyons edged rival Hinsdale Central 85-79 in overtime on Friday. Trailing the Red Devils 64-59 with a minute left in the game, the Lions rallied to tie the score at 67-all at the end of regulation.

A pair of layups by Mahoney coupled with 12-for-14 shooting from the free-throw line in overtime carried LT to victory. Zeisloft led the Lions with 29 points.

On Feb. 15, LT also earned a 67-58 win over host Hinsdale South.
