Team captures eighth straight MCAC title, shooting for eighth straight state title

Eight seems to be the number the Fenwick boys water polo team is shooting for this season. The Friars have already secured one goal that included the digit, and they’ll begin their quest for another on Thursday.

Fenwick won its eighth consecutive Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference Championship on Saturday with an 18-11 victory over Brother Rice. The Friars, who are vying for their eighth-straight state title, were led by Matt Farmer’s nine goals. Conor Brown added four goals in the win, while Viken Huening chipped in two. Goalkeeper Dan Newell finished with 11 saves.

“We were hoping to keep Brother Rice under 10, but they have some very talented players,” said Fenwick coach Kyle Perry. “The Catholic League is probably the best water polo conference in Illinois.”

In the semifinals, Fenwick downed St. Ignatius 15-9 behind Rich Mueller’s four goals. Brown netted three goals for the Friars, who pummeled De La Salle 15-3 in the quarterfinal on Friday. Fenwick jumped off to a 7-0 lead in that game and never looked back.

The Friars, who are ranked No. 1 in the state, will host Payton in the opening game of their own sectional on Thursday (4:30 p.m.). Fenwick could face cross-town rival Oak Park in the sectional championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Oak Park is the No. 2 seed in the sectional.
