It was Tyler Sewall Day on Saturday at the Dominican Priory’s baseball field in River Forest. Well, not officially, but the Fenwick senior earned a shutout on the mound and scored the game-winner for the Friars in a 1-0 win over St. Ignatius that went into extra innings.

Sewall pitched nine innings of shutout ball, yielding just six hits while fanning seven and walking none.

Brendan Fitzgerald, who went 2-for-4 in the game, helped bring in Sewall in the ninth. Brendan hit a sharp single to centerfield but an errant throw led to Sewall scoring from third. Sewall had reached base with a single. He moved to second after Mike Trucco drew a walk.

Fenwick fell 6-4 to St. Ignatius at UIC on Friday. The Wolfpack scored two runs in each of the first three innings before the Friars dropped four in the fifth. Collins drove in a run with a line drive to centerfield. Two errors by St. Ignatius led to three more runs in the frame, but the Friars were held hitless the rest of the game.

To start last week, Fenwick had its late season win-streak end at seven games with an 11-2 loss to Providence. The Friars managed just three hits, while pitchers Joe Patzelt and Mike Buzzell combined to allow 13 in 3 2/3 innings of work. Fenwick’s Ryan Fitzgerald led off the game with a solo homer over the centerfield fence.

The Friars began the week 16-12 overall. They were set to close out the regular season with home games against Foreman today (Wednesday, May 18) and Nazareth on Thursday.

Fenwick is the sixth seed in the Class 4A Mt. Carmel Sectional and begins play in the St. Rita Regional on May 26 against either Westinghouse or Whitney Young.
