A reputed drug dealer who allegedly sold designer cannabis bearing colorful names like Plane Wreck, Lavender Purps, Super Silver Haze and Cathouse Mango Rum is behind bars after his Chicago home was raided by police from Brookfield and the west suburban Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) on Aug. 3.
Jeffrey Harness, 45, of the 5300 block of Drummond in Chicago, faces a Class X felony charge of possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, which carries a sentence of between six and 30 years in prison if convicted. He was also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis over 5,000 grams, a Class 1 felony. He remains in Cook County Jail with his bond set at $100,000.
In all, police recovered 12.5 pounds of cannabis from a bedroom closet in Harness’ Belmont Cragin neighborhood home. The marijuana was divided up in 20 different bags, labeled for their particular characteristics, like Green Crack, Pineapple and Cheese. Police said the street value of the drugs was about $50,000.
“It was high-quality stuff,” said Brookfield Police Lt. Edward Petrak.
In a safe in the basement they reported seizing $17,000 in cash. They also seized a Russian army rifle, two 12-gauge shotguns, nine handguns and dozens of rounds of ammunition. Police said they found packaging materials as well, including scales, baggies, markers and a vacuum sealer.
Brookfield police secured a search warrant for Harness’ home after developing information on him during an ongoing drug investigation in the village.
Police raided Harness’ home just prior to 6 a.m. on Aug. 3. He was arrested without incident, Petrak said. A woman in the house at the time of the raid was not charged.
Harness will be back in court at Maybrook on Aug. 31.
