A 41-year-old Franklin Park man faces felony drunken-driving charges after he broadsided a motorcycle while making a U-turn on Cermak Road at Forest Avenue in North Riverside on Monday night.
Marco A. Bailon was heading westbound on Cermak Road at about 8:40 p.m., when he decided he was lost and attempted U-turn to get back to Harlem Avenue. He reportedly told police he didn’t see a group of motorcycles heading eastbound on Cermak Road when he decided to make the U-turn at Forest Avenue.
One motorcyclist swerved out of the way to avoid Bailon’s gray 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo. But Bailon allegedly struck another motorcycle driven by a 28-year-old Chicago man, throwing him onto the parkway.
A spokeswoman from Loyola University Medical Center, where the victim was taken by paramedics, said on Aug. 17 that the man remained hospitalized in serious condition. However, the victim was released from the hospital by Monday afternoon and, according to one police source, was expected to recover.
According to the police report, the victim suffered back, spinal and abdominal injuries.
A third motorcyclist said he demanded that Bailon get out of his car, but Bailon reportedly fled southbound on Forest Avenue, ditching his damaged car on a driveway apron in the 2200 block of Park Avenue, and hiding under a box truck parked in the alley about 200 feet away. He was found there by a North Riverside police officer at 9:13 p.m.
Bailon’s blood-alcohol an hour later was reported to be .193, which is more than twice the legal limit of .08. Police reported finding an empty pint bottle of rum and a water bottle containing another alcoholic beverage on the floor of the vehicle.
Bailon was charged with two felonies: DUI causing great bodily harm and leaving the scene of an accident. He was also charged with misdemeanors of DUI, failure to yield, improper U-turn, leaving the scene of an accident, operation of an uninsured vehicle and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Bailon appeared at a hearing at the Maybrook courthouse on Aug. 17, where his bond was set at $300,000.
Police also stated that the crash victim was driving on a suspended license and wasn’t wearing a helmet.
