James Joseph Valtman, 80, of Brookfield, died Aug. 22, 2011 due to complications following surgery.

Mr. Valtman graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving active for four years, including during the Korean War, and four years in the reserves.

After his discharge, Mr. Valtman resumed work at the Electro-Motive division of General Motors in McCook as a mater tool and die maker. He retired in 1979 after 30 years of service.

He enjoyed camping, hiking, kayaking, fishing and enjoying his many children and grandchildren.

A military funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road in Elwood. A memorial service celebrating his life will follow at 5 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave. in Downers Grove.
