Lyons Township has its third supervisor in less than a year. On June 14, William “Bill” Mundy was selected supervisor in a vote of the four Lyons Township trustees.

Mundy replaces Steve Landek, who had served as supervisor since last fall when former township Supervisor Russell Hartigan resigned to become a judge.

Landek resigned as supervisor about six months after he was appointed to the Illinois Senate to fill out the term of 11th District Sen. Lou Viverito who resigned last year.

Landek, also serves as the mayor of Bridgeview, a position that pays him a salary of $39,320.

Mundy had been a Lyons Township trustee. He was appointed township trustee in 2008 and won a full term in an unopposed election in 2009. He told the Landmark that he plans to run for re-election as supervisor in 2013.

Mundy, 47, is a Democrat. His day job is as public works and water superintendent for the village of Summit, where he also serves as a building official. He has worked for the village of Summit since graduating from high school.

As township supervisor, Mundy says that he will continue to look for ways to make township government more efficient.

“We run a pretty tight ship,” Mundy said. “There’s nobody who makes exorbitant salaries there. We’d like to combine some of the services and give the taxpayers their money’s worth. We’re just trying to keep running a tight ship, run as lean as we possibly can and try to save the taxpayers money when we can.”

Township government, which some see as an anachronism, administers general assistance and maintains roads, among other duties.

Colleen Kelly of Hickory Hills, an Indian Springs District 109 school board member, was appointed trustee to take Mundy’s place on the Lyons Township board.
