Lyons Township boys golf coach Brian Kopecky felt good about the Lions’ quality depth. The LT boys golfers collectively hit their stride during Saturday’s Class 3A State Finals round in Bloomington by capturing second place in the state with a team score of 621 over two rounds. Lake Forest (612) repeated as state champions.
Top LT golfer Charlie Netzel shot a 149 to earn state runner-up honors behind Lake Forest’s Joe Willis, who fired a 144 (even par) to win the individual state championship. Ryan Hudson (156), Dan Hudson (158), Kevin Carlson (160), Jack Ferguson (164) and Peter Swanson (168) also contributed for LT.
LT girls golf
The Lions took seventh place at the Class AA State Finals with a team score of 690 over two rounds of golf. Lyons sophomore Ciara Rattana shot a 164 (20-over) and senior Katie Ellis shot a 167 as the Lions’ top golfers.
LT boys soccer
Lyons(12-4-3, 5-1) nipped host Oak Park 1-0 to earn a share of the West Suburban (Silver) Conference title with Glenbard West. Defender Kevin Shaw scored the game-winner while goalkeeper Max Hadley recorded 10 saves.
LT closed outs its regular season with a 4-1 victory over Lockport (Oct. 12). Elliot Borge tallied a goal and assist, while Jon Jakob Lauser, Frankie Kocimski and Hector Godinez each scored a goal.
RB soccer
The Bulldogs (9-7-2) opened the playoffs at home on Tuesday vs. Juarez (after deadline). With a win, RB would advance to its regional championship on Saturday most likely against Metro Suburban Conference rival Glenbard South, which lost 4-3 to the Bulldogs during the regular season.
LT volleyball
The Lions edged Sandburg 25-21, 25-22 to win the Maine West Pumpkin Invitational on Saturday. Earlier last week, Hinsdale Central beat host LT 26-14, 19-25, 25-21 in a conference match-up. Alexis Vilunas paced the Lions with 10 kills and 19 assists, while Laura Williams (10 kills, 5 assists), Megan Miller (20 digs) and Alyssa Keeve (5 kills) also played well for LT.
RB volleyball
Alleigh VandeMerkt recorded three kills, three aces, 13 assists and 11 digs to spark the Bulldogs in a 23-25, 27-25, 25-16 victory over Ridgewood. The Bulldogs also defeated Fenton 25-11, 25-16 in another conference match last week.
LT & RB tennis
The Lions’ Alex Chatt rallied from a set down to defeat Hinsdale Central’s Alex Solovyev 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the singles championship match at Saturday’s Hinsdale Central Sectional. In the third-place match, Tiffany Chen of Hinsdale Central defeated Lyons’ Katie Miller 6-0, 6-0.
The host Red Devils won their sectional with 32 points, followed by LT (24), Hinsdale South (14), Nazareth (12) and RB (8). The Bulldogs’ Madison Powers won her singles opener over Morton Maria Reyes before losing to Chatt.
LT boys cross-country
Lyons took fourth place with 95 points at the West Suburban (Silver) Conference Meet. York (42) won the event followed by Hinsdale Central (70) and Oak Park (93). The Lions’ top runner Michael Matusiak finished the race at 15:18.
RB boys cross-country
Senior Travis Trevizo finished in fifth place at the Metro Suburban Conference Meet on Saturday. Sophomore Dan Curtin passed a pair of runners in the last 100 meters to take 12th and earn an all-conference medal. Senior Chris Dziagwa and sophomore Spencer Purcell both broke times of 17 minutes.
LT girls cross-country
Glenbard West and York tied for the West Suburban (Silver) Conference championship with 51 points apiece, followed by runner-up LT (68). LT runners Lisa Gordon (17:50), Alex Daemicke (18:04) and Haley Prokaski (18:08) all placed in the Top 10.
