The Fenwick soccer team had a hard time keeping Mather at bay in the Class 2A Ridgewood Sectional Championship in Norridge last week. After valiantly battling to a deficit of 2-1 by halftime, any hope of an upset over the stocked Rangers was quashed by two goals in the first five minutes of the second half as Mather eventually rolled to a 6-1 win.
Mather, who boasts five starters from Nigeria that have only been playing in the program for two years, dominated the game the rest of the way.
The Friars shut out Amundsen 3-0 to win the Ridgewood Sectional Semifinal to advance to the title game. Francisco Moreno, Jack Alberts and Justin Giacotto, all netted goals in that win.
The team closed out its season with an overall record of 12-6-3, including a 4-0-2 mark in the Chicago Catholic League where the Friars finished second.
Expected back to the lineup next year are Mike Nowicki and Jack Alberts, who combined to net 19 goals this season. Alberts also had 12 assists. The Friars will also be experienced at goalie again. The 6-foot-6 Jacob Peterson racked up nine shutouts as a junior this year.
The Friars’ debut in the Class 2A playoffs went smoothly, according to head coach Robert Watson.
“Our schedule is 95 percent against Class 3A [opponents], so we feel well prepared for the 2A tournament,” he said. “We feel that we will compete well in the 2A tournament moving forward.”
