Despite a 1-7 start, Lyons Township boys basketball coach Tom Sloan felt recent improvements from his team would pay off sooner or later. The Lions’ progress finally made its mark in the win-loss ledger as LT recorded a solid 2-2 showing at the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic in Elmhurst last week.

Lyons (3-9) snapped a six-game skid pulling off a first round 81-69 upset win over favored Waubonsie Valley. Four players reached double figures led by Kenny Smith’s 26 points for the 13th- seeded Lions. Chris O’Reilly (19 points), Matt Robare (14 points) and Chris Antalek (11 points) also led the charge offensively. Even more impressive, LT made 27 of 41 field goal attempts and shot 18-for-22 at the free-throw line in the team’s most efficient, impressive offensive performance this season.

The Lions’ other victory came on the final day of the four-day tourney against Maine South. LT raced out to a 42-28 halftime advantage and held on for a 70-61 win over the Hawks to capture seventh place overall at the annual tournament hosted by York.
