North Riverside resident Chase Malhiot received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the College of Professional Studies at National University of Health Sciences during commencement ceremonies on Dec. 15.

While completing the degree, Malhiot served a one-year clinical internship with a special focus on integrative medicine.

In November and December, members of the Lyons Township High School speech team brought home medals at recent tournaments.

On Dec. 3 Brookfield resident Denis Keljalic, a sophomore, teamed up with LaGrange Park resident Tom Weiler to win second place in Improv Duet Acting at the Maine Mania event. Keljalic also placed fifth in Oratorical Declamation and sixth place, along with LaGrange Park sophomore John Gallucci, in Humorous Duet Acting at the Prospect Heights Speechapalooza event on Nov. 12.

Meanwhile, Brookfield resident Amehlia Krupowicz, a sophomore, placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking at the Maine Mania event.

Anton Kompare, a student at Riverside-Brookfield High School, won a gold medal in a piano sonata competition sponsored by the Chicago Area Music Teachers Association on Dec. 3.

Kompare won the top honor in the competition for his performance of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” He reprised his performance at the chamber orchestra recital on Dec. 12.

On Dec. 15, Brookfield resident Nathan Smith, a junior majoring in physics at Augustana College in Rock Island, was among the students performing with the school’s Chamber Singers in a program of traditional Christmas music in the school’s Founders Hall.

Smith also participated along with 250 singers from the college and a professional chamber orchestra on Dec. 10 and 11in Augustana’s 131st anniversary performance of Handel’s “Messiah.”

Finally, Smith performed at the school’s annual Christmas at Augustana holiday concert on Dec. 2 and 3, along with other area students from the college, including Natalie Viscariello and Alan Bringman, of Brookfield, and Isaac Lauritsen, of Riverside.

Chelsea Vabro, a sophomore from North Riverside, is a member of the 2011-12 Illinois College dance team. Vabro, a graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School, is the daughter of Richard and Susan Vabro. The team promotes school spirit by performing dance routines at football and basketball games on campus. Illinois College is a liberal arts college in downstate Jacksonville.

Hannah Trotz, of Riverside, was been named to the dean’s list of scholars for the 2011 fall term at North Central College in Naperville. To be eligible for the dean’s list, undergraduate students must maintain a grade-point average of 3.6 on a 4-point scale.

George Washington Middle School students Josiah Veloz, Alexander Stancik, Alexa Suarez and Samantha Garcia won the grand prize at the National Fluid Power Association design competition at Harper Junior College in November 2011.

The students spent a day in October learning about fluid power, careers in the industry and building a simple fluid power lifter device. At the end of the day, they received a kit of materials and a description of a challenge for which they needed to design and build a machine.

During the final competition, the GWMS students topped 54 other teams with their device, which they named Jawz.
