Maryann R. Karlovsky, 77, of Riverside, died March 5, 2012.
Ms. Karlovsky began her teaching career in 1955 at Burnham School in Cicero and taught in that town’s schools until 1995. During her time in the district, she was named president of the Cicero Council and later became president the West Suburban Teachers Union Local 571 for 16 years, ending in 1995.
In retirement, she became president of the Local 571 Retirees Council, serving in that capacity from 1995 until 2008. She was active in union circles throughout her adult lifetime, serving as a delegate to many American Federation of Teachers conventions and at AFT retiree conferences. She was a delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor for more than 30 years.
She was a member of the Morton Scholarship League, the Riverside Chapter of the American Association of University Women, the Council for Exceptional Children and a member of former Illinois State Rep. William O’Connnor’s education committee.
For her service on behalf of teachers, she was given the Living Legacy Award by the American Federation of Teachers’ Women’s Rights Committee.
Ms. Karlovsky was the daughter of the late John and the late Anna Karlovsky and the sister of Rosalie Karlovsky.
A funeral service was held March 8 at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home in Riverside, followed by entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Forest Park.
