The Fenwick girls water polo team won its second straight and seventh overall state title on Saturday with unyielding defense and timely scoring in the fourth period to finish with a 10-7 victory.

Maureen Barron, Cara Borkovec, Paige Kuhut and Alexa Ovalle led the Friars by each scoring two goals apiece.

Maggie Sheean and Colleen Barron added a goal apiece for the Friars, who led 7-6 going into the final period. While senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Bonk kept Naperville Central at bay in the frame, Fenwick added some insurance goals. With 1:46 left on the clock, Alexa Ovalle drew a kick-out and converted a pass from Haley Wickham to put Fenwick up 8-6. A pass from Sheean to Ovalle led to another Fenwick goal with 56 seconds left.

Naperville Central scored its last goal with 39 seconds left, but 16 seconds later Maureen Barron added another goal for the Friars to close out the scoring.

“It was a great game, both teams were very equal, and I think we were just a little deeper in talent,” said Fenwick head coach Jack Wagner. “Both of us had players with foul trouble and we found a way to get past it and finish strong.”

Fenwick is likely to vie for its third-straight state title next season with 13 players expected back from this squad. The team will lose Bonk and Maureen Barron to graduation.

“We have a chance to make noise for a few more years,” said Wagner.
