Joseph C. Rejsek, 84, of Western Springs and formerly of Riverside, died Oct. 25, 2012.

Mr. Rejsek worked as a carpenter for Commonwealth Edison for 45 years prior to his retirement. For a half a century, he was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Along with Riverside Deputy Police Chief Robert Gordon, he founded the Riverside Police Explorer Post #390 in the 1980s, serving for many years as post advisor.

“Grandpa Joe” was active with the Riverside Police Explorers as late as February 2009, when at the age of 80, he was given the William H. Spurgeon III award by the Des Plaines Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is the highest distinction given people contributing their leadership to Boy Scout Explorers.

He was the husband of Eileen Rejsek (nee Pembroke); the father Nancy (Martin) Gardner, Joleen (Jon) Tschaikovsky, Monsignor J. Brian Rejsek, Denise (Corey) Gritsch, Monica (William) Koder and the late Kathleen Kapelanski; the grandfather of Eric Gardner, Megan (Justin) Miskawitz, Janell Tschaikovsky, Jenna Tschaikovsky, Jocelyn Tschaikovsky, Dylan Gritsch, Samantha Koder and the late Shannon Gardner; the great-grandfather of Eli Miskawitz; the brother of LaVerne (Norm) Provan and Genevieve (late Joseph) Huck; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 29 at St. John of the Cross Church in Western Springs, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Memorial donations in Mr. Rejsek’s name are appreciated to the Shannon K. Gardner Scholarship Fund at Lewis University.
