Bernard Neiweem, 87, of LaGrange Park, died Dec. 2, 2012 at his home.

Born in 1925 to Joseph and Mary Neiweem, he grew up in Winnetka and graduated from New Trier High School, where he captained the football team. In 1943 at the age of 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan after the war.

On Sept. 27, 1947 he married Margaret J. Beck in Cincinnati. He trained to be an engineer and started his own business, Standard Heating and Cooling, in Brookfield in 1973. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Neiweem was also a past president of the board of directors of the Helping Hand Rehabilitation Center in Countryside. He also enjoyed traveling, playing golf and gardening.

He was the husband of Margaret J. Neiweem (nee Beck); then father of Jane Ann Neiweem, Peggy Jean Neiweem, Bernard M. (Debra) Neiweem, John J. (Annette) Neiweem and the late Mark Neiweem; the grandfather of Jessica, Eric, Christopher and Mark; the step-grandfather of Laura and Aaron; and the great-grandfather of Charlie.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9 at Johnson Funeral Home, 3845-47 Prairie Ave. in Brookfield.

A memorial service and interment with full military honors will be held at Abraham Lincoln National cemetery in Elwood at a later date.
