With two tournament titles already under its belt, the red-hot Riverside-Brookfield girls basketball team went to work in league play last week and captured a 50-39 win over Fenton in Metro Suburban Conference action.
Senior guard Hannah Claywell scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter leading RB to victory. Janae Dabney (12 points), Emma Schander (career-high 11 points) and Brittney JnoBaptiste (7 points, 9 rebounds) also played key roles for the Bulldogs.
“Hannah is a pretty dynamic scorer and she came up big for us in the fourth quarter,” RB coach Dallas Till said. “Emma recently cracked the starting lineup and she brings toughness to our team by doing all the little things like hitting the floor for loose balls and setting screens.
“We still need to improve our halfcourt offense, but overall I’m very pleased with our start this season.”
Till also praised the contributions of Miranda Chavez, Caroline Waas, Stephanie Taccola and Sydney Martinez against the Bison.
The visiting Bison held an early lead, 9-3, at the end of the first quarter. However, RB picked up the pace and outscored Fenton 17-5 in the second quarter en route to a 23-14 halftime lead. Despite 10 points from Sydney Montano in the third quarter, Fenton could never regain its first-quarter advantage as the Bulldogs ratcheted up their full court pressure.
RB (8-1, 1-0 Metro Suburban Conference) hits the road this week with at Illiana Christian on Thursday (7 p.m.).
