Slowly, stealthily, Silvis, Ill., the Golf Ball City has been eating away at Brookfield’s lead in the race for Best Water Tank.
At last count Brookfield had 20.08 percent of the vote, while Silvis crept closer at 18.89 percent. Come on folks go outside and use 3G to cast another vote on your phone, I know I did.
Do not fail Brookfield!

With less than 15 hours to go, Brookfield maintains a slight lead over Silvis, Ill., the Golf Ball City, in the race for Best Water Tank in the nation. The response to Silvis’ counterpunch on Wednesday was only extraordinary.
This morning, Brookfield is hanging on with 20.33 percent of the vote, while Silvis has dropped to 18.43 percent. Still, recall the last time we saw this scenario: Silvis mounted a valiant flanking manuever, featuring furious mouse clicks and anti-bot code keystrokes. There remains the possibility for another desperate charge.
Fortunately for Brookfield, the artillery arrived Thursday afternoon when the Brookfield Zoo posted a link to the water tank voting site and additional words of encouragement on its Facebook page. Our thanks to Stuart Strahl, our comrade in computer-voting savvy, and the entire, far-flung Brookfield Zoo family. Your clicks are much appreciated.
In addition, there was a sign from the heavens.
On Thursday, Brookfield Zoo announced the birth of a bottlenose dolphin at the zoo. That birth came on Wednesday, during the Brookfield water tower’s darkest hour. There are no coincidences.

Brookfield has responded swiftly and without pity.
As of this afternoon, Brookfield is back in the lead — narrowly. The great village of Brookfield now has 20.78 percent of the vote to Silvis, Ill.’s 20.12 percent. There is another “Slap Shot” pep talk I could think to include at this point, but this remains a family news organization and, well … If you really need inspiration just type “the Hansons are pumped” into the YouTube search feature.

May day! May day!
Well, it appears Silvis, Ill., the Golf Ball City, has enlisted the assistance of the entire Quad Cities region to muscle its way into what is becoming a comfortable lead for the prestigious honor of having the Best Water Tank in the nation.
The small, but apparently resourceful, town has run up 22.4 percent of the vote compared to Brookfield’s 19.08 percent in the past 22 hours.
This calls for an extraordinary response and may include having to ask people from, I know it hurts, Riverside to help get Brookfield over the hump. If that’s too much to bear, contact your friends in LaGrange, Lyons, Countryside, Westchester, LaGrange Park, North Riverside. Let your Berwyn friends know. Berwyn has a vast untapped resource of 55,000 people who, I understand, are very fond of dolphins and enjoy a trip to the zoo as mauch as anyone, to assist us.
We can’t go down without a fight!

Silvis, Ill., the Golf Ball City, has regained the lead with 19.81 percent of the vote. Brookfield, too confident in its dolphins to lure people into votes, has fallen to second place at 19.21 percent.
Come on, folks, this is Cook County! Let’s show ’em how voting is done!

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 9:20 a.m.
The leads holds. But the competition has noticed.
As of this morning, Brookfield maintained its lead in its bid for nationwide water tank glory. There are less than three days to go (way less, because who really will be casting votes at 11 p.m. on the 18th?), but Brookfield’s lead has actually shrunk slightly since yesterday afternoon.
Brookfield is still in the lead with 19.59 percent of the vote. Silvis, Ill., the Golf Ball City, remains in second place with 18.65 percent. That’s actually a bit better for Silvis than late Tuesday afternoon, when they had fallen below 18 percent, so it appears they are not going to do the right thing and lay down. Mt. Vernon, Ill., meanwhile, appears content to finish third at 13.74 percent.
Keep sharing, and tell your friends to keep clicking (on different computers).

We are in the lead.
Your hard work sharing Facebook posts and clicking mouses (mice?) and typing in those hard-to-read anti-bot codes has resulted in Brookfield vaulting into first place with 18.24 percent of the vote. But Brookfield must remain vigilant. We are now the hunted.
Silvis, Ill., is now in second place, but only by the smallest of margins, with 17.99 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, Mt. Vernon, Ill., has crept up with 14.25 percent of the vote. They must be vanquished!

Well, Brookfield has narrowed the margin but not by nearly enough.
At last count Silvis, Ill., led with 18.73 percent of the vote. Brookfield was second with 15.81 percent. No one else, not even mighty Albany, N.Y., is close.
Here is what we’re up against — and alderman who wants the Silvis water tower to win the coveted best water tank award to lure visitors from the nearby PGA John Deere golf tournament (it’s painted like a golf ball on a tee — boooooo, we have beautiful dolphins!)

A source here at water tank vote HQ informs us that we didn’t scroll down far enough when we last checked out the vote totals. Incredibly, Brookfield is in 2nd place, not first. Folks, we are being bested by Silvis, Ill., which Wikipedia tells us is a town of fewer than 8,000 people near Rock Island.
People, let’s show Silvis who’s water tank boss around here.

As of 9:30 a.m. Brookfield has vaulted into the lead in the voting. Oh, and not that we’d suggest such a thing, but it appears you can vote more than once.

How proud are you of the Brookfield water tower’s new paint job? The Tnemec Company (that’s not a misspelling or acronym. EDIT: it’s “cement” spelled backward. … Yeah, me neither.) wants to know.
The Kansas City-based company, which manufactures industrial coatings for structures like water tanks and manufacturing plants, seeks votes in its “Tank of the Year” contest.

The top 12 vote-getters will then get the once over from company officials, who will choose the winner. And the prize for winning Tank of the Year? You’re sitting down? Brookfield’s water tower, with its distinctive dolphins, was repainted this summer. The finished product is quite nice and glossy and the dolphins and lettering are a bit different than the previous paint job, which was done in 1996. We’ll put up a photo when we get a chance to take one. Or send one to us, and we’ll use that. Chris Stach, we know you have one.
Better get a move on, though — Albany, N.Y.; Mt. Vernon, Ill.; and Silvis, Ill., are way ahead. Voting ends Oct. 18 at 11:59 p.m.
