A fire destroyed a historic Lyons building that has served as something of a landmark on the south side of the Barrypoint Road bridge overnight.
The vacant former home to the Lyons Chamber of Commerce at 3901 Joliet Ave., a stucco covered structure sporting three corner turrets that pay homage to the Hofmann Tower across the street, has been something of a property maintenance concern in recent years.
According to property records on file with the Cook Conty Recorder of Deeds, the property appears to be owned by the Lyons Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the chamber took out a $15,000 mortgage on the property, signing an agreement with a man named Mark Van Wormer.
In January 2009, Van Wormer and Stephen Mazur, a Lyons political operative and former Lyons District 103 school board member, initiated a foreclosure action against the Lyons Chamber of Commerce. The foreclosure case was dismissed for want of prosecution on June 28, 2013, according to Cook County Circuit Court records.
