Brookfield will restart its residential street repaving program in 2014, focusing on portions of three streets on the village’s south end.

On Dec. 9, the Brookfield village board considered a recommendation by the village’s public works director to resurface Oak and Sunnyside avenues from Ogden to Shields avenues and to repave Rochester Avenue from Maple to Vernon avenues.

In a survey of street conditions completed by the village’s engineering firm earlier this fall, Village Engineer Derek Treichel rated the pavement condition of those blocks as among the poorest in the village.

In addition to resurfacing the streets, portions of the combined sewer system below the streets will be repaired, along with deteriorated drainage structures and sections of curb and gutter.

Sunnyside Avenue is scheduled to be widened 3 feet, from 22 to 25 feet in order to meet the minimum width for residential streets per the village’s policy. Oak Avenue will not be widened, since it is already 30 feet wide, said Treichel. Meanwhile, Rochester Avenue will remain 22 feet wide.

“There are no homes fronting Rochester, so there’s not the same parking demand as on the north-south streets,” Treichel said.

Driveway aprons disturbed by the construction will be replaced and the village will install disability-accessible sidewalk ramps on corners and at alleys. Any parkway areas affected by construction will be replanted with turf.

In all, the project is estimated to cost about $1.7 million, which includes $218,300 for engineering design services. The work will be paid for through a combination of motor fuel tax funds and reserves in the village’s water/sewer fund.

Although no formal vote was taken, Dec. 9, village trustees gave their consent for Hancock Engineering to begin preparing bid documents and field work. The project is expected to be put out for bidding in February, with bids returned and a contract awarded in March.

Construction could begin as early as April 2014, Treichel said.

According to Village Manager Riccardo Ginex, if bids come in lower than expected, it may be possible to begin preliminary engineering on another section of roadway — Garfield Avenue between Kemman Avenue and Grand Boulevard — though no construction would occur on that block in 2014.

Other sections of roadway determined to be in the poorest shape and likely up for repair in coming years include Garfield Avenue from Kemman to Maple, Madison Avenue from 31st Street to Jackson Avenue, Sunnyside Avenue from 31st Street to Monroe Avenue, Vernon Avenue from Garfield to Monroe avenues, Jackson Avenue from Maple to Prairie avenues, Congress Park Avenue from Eberly to Raymond avenues, Sahler Avenue from Eberly to Raymond avenues, Riverside Avenue from Hollywood Avenue to the Riverside village border and the northern half of the 4500 block of Madison Avenue.
