Riverside-Brookfield High School sophomore guard Daniko Jackson took the Bulldogs’ basketball scene by storm during the 2012-13 campaign powering the freshmen team to a 24-0 record.

Promoted to the varsity this season, the flashy but fundamental 5-foot-9 playmaker has guided RBHS to a 12-4 record, including a 5-0 mark in the Metro Suburban Conference. Jackson scored 21 points and dished out eight assists Saturday during the Bulldogs’ 78-73 win over TEAM Englewood at the 13th Annual Martin Luther King Classic hosted by Whitney Young.

I recently caught up with the soft-spoken Jackson to talk about life on and off the court.

How’s the season gone so far for you and the team? We’re having a good season and we’re improving as we go. We played a tough schedule at the beginning of the season and that prepared us to win games later. Personally, I’m just trying to get my all teammates involved in the game and be a leader.

What’s been the biggest adjustment for you from freshmen to varsity basketball? The pace is different. Everybody is stronger and faster, so I need to be smart with the basketball. I have to give a lot of credit to my coaches. They are all very supportive and helped me improve as a player.

How proud are you of last year’s freshmen team recording an undefeated season? I’m very proud of that accomplishment. It was a lot of fun and a big confidence builder for me coming up to the varsity this season.

Describe the thrill of making a flashy play on the court? It’s a great feeling. I like to make no-look passes sometimes just for fun and to get my teammates going.

Who’s the jokester on the team? Definitely [RBHS senior guard] Will Kincanon. He keeps everybody laughing and loose on the team. We have great team chemistry and everybody likes to have fun.

Will you play AAU basketball this summer? Yes, I’m looking to play for either Chicago Lockdown or the Illinois Wolves. I also play a lot of summer basketball here at RB with my high school teammates. I love it because all the best competition comes right to our home gym during the summer. It makes me play my best basketball.

Who’s your favorite NBA player? I like Chris Paul, because he has such a high basketball IQ and controls the flow of the game. He’s also a leader.

Greatest invention? Cellphone

Are you into social media? Yes, I’m really into all kinds of social media. People can follow me [on Twitter] at @danikojackson.

What are three words that best describe you? Fun, smart, leader

Favorite TV show? ESPN SportsCenter

Favorite movie? He Got Game. I heard they might be making a sequel, but I hope not. I don’t think it’s a good idea, because it would be pretty hard to top the first one.

Favorite book? I loved The Outsiders.

Favorite food? Pizza, chips

What are your three “must-haves” if you’re stranded on a deserted island? That’s an easy question. I would need a basketball, cellphone and clothes.

Favorite vacation spot? Hawaii

Describe a “perfect” off day for you? I’d just hang out with my friends, play basketball all day and eat a lot of good food. I love eating; it’s probably my favorite thing to do aside from basketball.
