Four people walked away unharmed after a the vehicle they were traveling in skidded out of control and collided with a Canadian National Railway freight train in North Riverside on Friday afternoon.

According to Sgt. David Kopka of the North Riverside police, at about 1:25 p.m. a Ford Focus was headed southeast on the First Avenue cutoff approaching Cermak Road when the driver lost control. The car crossed Cermak Road and onto the railroad tracks, striking the freight train, which was crossing the street and headed in the same direction.

The vehicle ended up about eight feet south of Cermak Road, said Kopka, and the train was able to stop quickly.

“It was a low-speed crash,” said Kopka. “There were no injuries and no derailment.”

Paramedics tended to the people in the car at the scene. All refused to be taken to the hospital.

“For a car being struck by a train, it was pretty minor,” Kopka said.

The crash had a major impact, however, on traffic. Police did not clear the scene until about 3:40 p.m.
